to sand down bondo, start at a rough grit and work your way finer until you get to 2000 gritHow many coats of primer paint and clearcoat do i need for my car to be shiny?
Bondo should be sanded down with 80 grit, then feather out the 80 grit scratches with 180. On the parts that are not bondo, you need to sand first with 320 grit, unless your car has deep defects that go down to the metal, in which case you should use 180 grit. Sand it until the surface is level and you have gotten rid of all pits and scratches. If you mostly have bare metal left at this point, you need to use a single coat of an etching primer followed 3 to 5 coats of regular primer. Allow the primer to dry overnight. If you want to be thorough you can re-sand with 320 grit to level the surface out again to make sure you haven't missed anything and reprime. Sand with 400 grit at this point. If you are painting with a single stage black, you can apply 2 or 3 coats. Sand with 1500 grit until the surface is smooth and you've gotten out all of the trash and gotten the orange peel to a level that you desire. You can make it perfectly flat, although some people prefer the look of a little factory-looking slight peel. Follow this with a trizac 3000 grit pad. Buff and polish a lot for that shine you desire. If you're using a base/clear paint then apply 3 coats of base followed by 2 or 3 coats of clear and then wet sand and buff to bring out the shine.
Careful with any contemporary paint. The hardener contains a form of cyanide and you should not attempt to paint with this stuff unless you have the proper protective clothing and respirator. You can do the prep work and primer ok. Leave the finish to the experts.
1 if it's good quality paint, but no body only puts one coat of paint on a car. 2 coats minimal.
do you have the facility to paint a car, can't do it outside
