I paint, how can I sell my paintings, and do I need to patent them before I try to sell them?

HERE'S THE DEAL.

First scan or take a picture of your art. Then ';publish'; it. How?. Get a free website with yahoo or something and create a gallery. Give a description of each drawing. Include:

Title

Date of Creation

Medium Used

Description (may include your inspiration to draw or paint this particular image)

When you sell your drawing include a certificate of authenticity. You can make this yourself on word or publisher. It includes the item mention on the top including a thumbnail image of your work. Or you can become a member of an art society of which a few of them offer to help you authenticate your work. They may even offer to publish your creation on their site.

No Patenting

No Copyrighting

Definately Sign

Definately Publishing (unless it's a commissioned item in which case the person who asked you to make the creation is the rightful owner of that creation. Then can modify it. Ask someone else to copy and alter it's pose or positioning to suite another purpose and so on. YOU MAY NOT PUBLISH A COMMISSIONED PIECE UNLESS GIVEN PERMISSION BY OWNER. You may however create a print of it and hold it in a gallery as a sample of work you are capable of doing)

You can sell on ebay or other auction but we sure not to devaluate your work. The more popular you are the more you art is worth sometimes regardless of what it looks like. The more you are commissioned to perform work the better for you as you can ad that to your art resume. Hold galleries and art shows in your community. Join artist associations as they may have leads for your work. Create and publish a book on your art. Find an accomplished art book publisher.

I actually don't think you can get a copyright for paintings. Copyrights are usually for characters, phrases, titles, and logos. I've seen people sell their work on eBay. That would be the easiest thing to do, in my opinion.
You would want a copyright, not a patent. A patent is for an invention and a copyright is for ideas, books, movies, etc.

There are many avenues of selling your painting. You could try to get a broker (who would work for a percentage), or use the Internet (get a website), or try the traditional galleries.

In any case, you've got to advertise!! Make some mass mailings, take an ad out, send out samples, go to art shows, do anything to get noticed! =)

Advertise, word of mouth is the best
I dont know much about art but I think you may be able to post it and sell it on deviantart.com.
You can also sell reproductions. Try Cafepress: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/storere鈥?/a>

You can upload your images, create and sell a variety of customizable products (posters, cards, tshirts, gadgets...) with zero upfront costs and zero inventory investment.
Start meeting and networking with people in the art community where you live, or the closest metropolitan city. Create a photo portfolio of enlarged photos of your paintings. Start talking to gallery owners about how one gets introduced into art showings and exhibitions. Your portfolio will allow them to view your work. When taking pictures of your work, make sure lighting is good and that you are using a 35mm camera with correct film speed for indoors for the best quality picture.

Do you now go to lots of art showings? Get to know local artists? Networking and showing around your work once you feel comfortable enough to do so would be a good start. Don't get discouraged!!
You don't need to ';get'; a copyright. Once you sign a painting, its copyrighted. You own the rights to that painting. No one can reproduce it without your permission.
You don't patent paintings. You can register them for copyright with the Library of Congress if you want to. But remember that copyright exists upon creation of the work. On the face of the painting, when you sign it, put a C in a circle and the year of creation. You can enter your paintings in art exhibit and put a price tag on them. You can also create a web-site and sell them there. Gallery representation is another way. You can try to submit articles about your work to art magazines and hope they publish them.
You can't get a patent for a paiting. Patents are for invetions.

You'd have to get a copyright. IF you are in the US, you need to see what the copyright regulations are, and this is about as official as it gets.
